First published: London : M. Joseph, 1961.
John Grant, a school teacher, is posted to a one-teacher school at Tiboonda, a remote settlement in outback Australia. The school consists of one room, containing twenty-two desks for twenty-eight pupils, and some crude toilet facilities in the grounds. He saves enough money for a return trip home to Sydney during the Christmas vacation. He travels to nearby Bundanyabba, from where he will catch a plane to Sydney. "Staying long?", asks the taxi driver. "Just tonight", he replies. However, he bets on a two-up game in the hope of winning enough money to pay off the Education Department bond. He loses, and ends up penniless and stranded in Bundanyabba for the vacation. Things deteriorate from there?
