Summary Note
This report summarises results from the Women in Unions survey of 2010. Among its findings are that although women constitute just under half of total union membership (according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it is 48 per cent), 54.8 per cent of delegates of the respondent unions are women. However, the percentage of women filling senior and elected positions is much lower - 30 per cent of elected Secretaries and Assistant Secretaries, 36.8 per cent of branch committee members, and 40 per cent of elected Presidents or Vice Presidents. Barriers to women's advancement include: "[1] lack of women in elected roles, female role models and female influence regarding union policies and administration; [2] persistent stereotyped perceptions of the role of women in unions; [3] lack of support for women delegates who wish to move into higher roles in the union, and; [4] lack of flexible work options to assist women to balance work and family" (p. 6). The report also makes a number of recommendations to increase women's involvement in unions.
