Summary Note
Indigenous people in Australia face significantly worse rates of health and social conditions than the general population. In 2008, The Australian Government aimed to 'close the gap' on Indigenous disadvantage, and developed six targets and deadlines aimed at significantly reducing the gap in life expectancy and opportunities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. These targets are to: close the gap in life expectancy within a generation; halve the gap in mortality rates for Indigenous children under 5 by 2018; provide early childhood education access for all Indigenous 4 year olds in remote communities by 2013; halve the gap for Indigenous students in reading, writing and numeracy by 2018; halve the gap in Year 12 or equivalent attainment for Indigenous 20-24 year olds by 2020; and halve the gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians by 2018. This fourth annual review reports on the progress made on each target, and also discusses the achievements of some individual and national projects. The document also reviews achievements under the seven Building Blocks that help support these targets. These are: early childhood; schooling; health; healthy homes; safe communities; economic participation; and governance and leadership.
