Among the significant items identified by the Auditor-General are: "Schools - Six of eight measures relating to increasing the proportion of students at or above the national minimum standards in reading and numeracy decreased from 2008 to 2013; Three of eight measures relating to increasing the proportion of students in the top two performance bands for reading and numeracy decreased from 2008 to 2013; Five of eight measures relating to halving the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students in literacy and numeracy by 2018 increased from 2008 to 2012; Three of the eight primary education service measures were not met in 2012; Six of the eight secondary education service measures were not met in 2012. Tertiary education - Targets for the proportion of people with qualifications at AQF Certificate III and above are not likely to be met; The proportion of school leavers fully participating in further education, training and employment has decreased from 2006 to 2011. Teachers - In 2012, 241 permanent government school teachers expressed an interest in gaining higher level professional accreditation; Almost 54 per cent of the Department’s school teachers are 45 years of age or older; Almost 35 per cent of the teaching workforce will reach notional retirement age in the next five years; Over 69 per cent of school principals are older than 50; More than 37,000 applicants are seeking permanent teaching positions; Over 69 per cent of TAFE teachers are aged 50 and over. Financial information - The proportion of total government spending on the education sector is falling; The Department gave $875 million to non-government schools during 2013; The Department is on track to deliver major investments in Schools and TAFE NSW, funded through the 2012-13 Budget; The Department’s expenses were $602 million under budget." - p. 2-3.
