Arthur Murch (1902-1989) was a painter, sculptor, war artist and teacher. During his career, Murch was a colleague of Rayner Hoff, Donald Friend, Sir William Dobell, Jean Appleton and George Lambert. He won the 1949 Archibald Prize with his portrait of Bonar Dunlop. Arthur Murch's work is held by the National Gallery and many State Galleries. Ernie Cahill was a awarded life membership of the NSW Teachers Federation in 1947. He died in 1958. The Federation established a memorial in his honour, Education Vol. 40 No. 6 May 20 1959, page 12.
"The Federation Executive, on September 14, 1960, considered that the money subscribed to the Ernie Cahill Memorial Fund should be expended on two or three suitable pictures to be placed in the Federation Library." -- NSWTF Annual Report 1960, p. 41-42.
