General Note Key points from the Executive Summary include: Students in Singapore and Korea, followed by students in Japan, score higher in problem solving than students in all other participating countries and economies. Across OECD countries, 11.4% of 15-year-old students are top performers in problem solving. On average across OECD countries, about one in five students is able to solve only straightforward problems - if any - provided that they refer to familiar situations. In Australia, Brazil, Italy, Japan, Korea, Macao-China, Serbia, England (United Kingdom) and the United States, students perform significantly better in problem solving, on average, than students in other countries who show similar performance in mathematics, reading and science. Boys outperform girls in problem solving in 23 countries/economies, girls outperform boys in five countries/economies, and in 16 countries/economies, there is no significant difference in average performance between boys and girls. The impact of socio-economic status on problem-solving performance is weaker than it is on performance in mathematics, reading or science.
Summary Note "This is the fifth of six volumes that presents the results from PISA 2012. It begins by providing the rationale for assessing problem-solving competence in PISA, and introduces the innovative features of the 2012 assessment. Chapter 2 introduces the problem-solving performance scale and proficiency levels, examines student performance in problem solving, and discusses the relationship between problem-solving performance and performance in mathematics, reading and science. Chapter 3 provides a nuanced look at student performance in problem solving by focusing on students’ strengths and weaknesses in performing certain types of tasks. Chapter 4 looks at differences in problem-solving performance related to education tracks and to students’ gender, socio-economic status and immigrant background. It also examines students’ behaviours and attitudes related to problem solving, and students’ familiarity with information and communication technology. The volume concludes with a chapter that discusses the implications of the PISA problem-solving assessment for education policy and practice." - p. 22.
