Narration provided by Maurie Mulheron, March 2011: The banner was drawn by Maurie Mulheron when he was Federation Representative at James Meehan High School, Harold Street, Macquarie Fields. The banner was one of two made for the August 17th 1988 rally in the Domain organised to protest against the Greiner-Metherell cuts to education. The two figures in the drawing are the Premier Nick Greiner, wearing his old school tie, and his Minister for Education, Terry Metherell. The drawing was based on a Greg Gaul cartoon from an earlier edition of Education. Teachers from James Meehan High School carried the banners. I was asked by the Senior Officers to perform my song, “I’m changing our name to Grammar” which I sang on the back of the truck, the main stage, at the Domain rally. The banners were sewn by one of the Home Economics teachers at James Meehan High School. I then took it to my parents' garage (as I did not have one where we were living) who lived in Punchbowl on the weekend before the rally and stuck it on the wall and drew on them. No other helpers except my parents babysat my two daughters (then aged 6 and 5) while I did it. I have photographs of me singing Grammar song in the Domain (published in the journal) which should be in the archives but I can supply as I was given copies by the then editor. The second banner carried at the rally was left behind at James Meehan High School in 1992, hanging on the wall of the English staffroom. It read: Public Schools Are Best, Stop Funding the Rest."
