Summary Note	The author advances the following three arguments. First, leadership matters. The quality and practice of leadership is linked in a consistent and demonstrable way to improved student achievement and educational equity. Second, leadership is inclusive. We can no longer afford to restrict our definition of leadership to those who carry a title traditionally associated with leadership. Rather, we must expand our view of leadership to include teachers and leaders at every level, from the classroom to the board room. Third, leadership practices can be taught and learned. While there are strong societal pressures that maintain leadership as a mysterious brotherhood into which only the cognoscenti are admitted, an international leadership crisis in education and other fields demands that we nurture and develop leaders and not wait, hoping that tradition and primogeniture will suffice to fill the next generation of leadership roles.
