Title Poster - White Australia has a black history.
Published Sydney : NSW Teachers Federation, 1988.
Collation 1 poster : colour ; 44 x 32 cm.
General Note Text on poster: On this occasion of the presentation of the bicentennial medallions, it is important that we be aware of how Aboriginal people feel. The New South Wales Teachers Federation and the New South Wales Aboriginal Education Consultative Group believe the following statement expresses those feelings.
Additional text on poster: White Australia has a Black History. We, the Aboriginal people of New South Wales, cannot celebrate the European invasion of our lands which began 200 years ago. This caused the death of many of our people and destroyed much of our traditional culture. Our country was a very rich and beautiful place when the Europeans arrived. According to Aboriginal history, we have occupied this county since the Dreaming. We are the oldest living culture in the world and continue to celebrate our guardianship of this land. We hope that during the bicentennial anniversary non-Aboriginal people will take time to reflect upon Australia's recent history and come to acknowledge the need to compensate us for the dispossession of our land and the impact it has had on our way of life. All Australians Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike, have a responsibility to work towards redressing the imbalance that exists and ensuring that we, the Aboriginal people of New South Wales, gain appropriate respect for our heritage and an economic base, so that we can all grow together. This certificate has been presented to the school community by the NSW Teachers Federation and the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group on May 9, 1988.
