To climb the hill :
Copy signed by John Beach, Principal Newcastle East Public School, and, Justice Michael Kirby. Donated by NSW Teachers Federation President, Maurie Mulheron, who attended the Bicentenary Dinner at the Newcastle City Hall on Saturday February 6, 2016. The speakers were the Hon. Julia Gillard, who launched the book, and Justice Michael Kirby. Former pupils include: Ben Lexcen, who designed the yacht Australia II, in which Australia won the America's Cup in 1983, and the actor Miranda Otto. Text of Julia Gillard's speech in pocket inside back cover. Bicentenary Dinner programme in pocket inside back cover. "This book had its genesis in the notion that Australia's oldest school which for two centuries has championed the right of all children to quality education, regardless of wealth, religion or ethnicity, was worthy of a school history reflecting its egalitarian values. Such an enterprise should relate each significant era of the school's history directly through the experiences of the children. And in telling their story, the book would become also a social history of Australia's second oldest city, Newcastle, and a chronology of the development of our nation." -- Preface, John Beach, Principal, Newcastle East Public School, February 2016.
