General Note
Contains history of teacher training in New South Wales : Pre 1851 : Teachers given a month's training and observation at the model school. (p.52) -- 1851 : William Wilkins established pupil-teacher system. Pupil teachers were employed at a minimum age of 13 to spend four years teaching children and being instructed themselves by a qualified teacher after school hours. (p.52) -- 1867 : 3 months training at the training school course at Fort Street. (p.76) -- 6 months training at the training school course at Fort Street. (p.76) -- 1876 : Some teachers receive 12 months training. (p.76) -- 1883 : The Department opened a residential training school for female teachers at Hurlstone, leaving the Fort Street Training School for male teachers; the course was extended to 12 months. Most teachers trained here were former pupil-teachers, but not all pupil-teachers were admitted. (p.114) -- 1889 : Training School Course extended to two years, with attendance at University lectures. (p.114) -- Majority of teachers still older and untrained. (p.139) -- System of teacher training condemned by Knibbs and Turner as the most serious defect in the educational system in NSW, because of the way it employed young people of inadequate education themselves and inexperienced teachers. (p.139) -- 1906 : No new pupil-teachers were taken on and Fort Street and Hurlstone Training Schools were amalgamated on the Blackfriars Public School site as Sydney Teachers College. A 2-year training course was introduced for all primary teachers. (p.139) -- 1911 : For teachers in secondary schools a one-year post-graduate diploma in education was introduced to provide practice and theory in education prior to appointment. (p.140) -- 1902 : Aboriginal students excluded from schools if white parents objected. A system of inferior schools established for Aboriginal students on Aboriginal stations. Teachers appointed were rarely trained and were expected to supervise the operation of the station besides teach school. Some teachers appointed because they possessed the 'missionary spirit' thought to be necessary for work among Aborigines. (p.181) -- 1958 : Equal pay for women teachers; proportion of women teachers increased. (p.213) -- 1969 : Extension of the two-year primary course of training to three years. (p.213) -- 1971 : Appointment of untrained undergraduates discontinued. (p.249).

The importance of the Department had been recognised in stone if not in architectural excellence. In the 1920s a matching half was added to the building so that it filled the entire city block.
