Title
Aristotle on the necessity of public education / Randell R. Curren. [BOOK]
Published
Lanham, Md. : Rowman and Littlefield, 2000.
Collation
278 p. ; 23 cm.
General Note
The author "note[s] the insufficiency of the grounds on which the Aristotelian arguments for public education have been dismissed, and conclude that they provide us with compelling reasons to reaffirm, and do justice to, the fundamental commitments on which the American system of universal public schooling was founded. Turning to the upshot of these arguments for debates over school choice or market approaches to distributing education, versus schools that are 'common' or economically, socially, ethnically, and racially mixed, I conclude that there is a strong case to made for common schooling, and that the prospects for privatizing education in a way that would be acceptable are dim." - p. 10.
