This article was included in the "Principals' conference readings", published by the NSW Teachers Federation for its 2011 principals' conference.
This volume, the 25th anniversary issue of the journal, is entitled "Education, capitalism and the global crisis". All the articles focus on "The spectre at the feast: capitalist crisis and the politics of recession", a book written by Andrew Gamble, published in 2009.
Summary Note
Ben Levin has held senior leadership poisitions in education ministries in two Canadian provinces. Professor Levin's work is well known to educational leaders througtout the world. In this paper Levin explains how many highly competitive systems fail to generate improvements in student learnings. He cites examples of "educational reform" in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and the UK. to illustrate his arguments. These reforms have created resentment, confusion and anxiety.
