Summary Note Additional text: ... and they are worried - because the serious problems bedevilling our public education system are problems they can't solve, problems caused by Government indifference and neglect.
They can't give your children the attention they want to. How can you give a child a "fair go" if there are too many in the class - or if there's half a class of an absent teacher as well, because no relief teacher is provided, for periods as long as three days?
They can't get on with their job - of teaching your children. Because they must spend much of their time on non-teaching duties - duties which should be done by Clerks, Laboratory Attendants, Janitors and Groundsmen. Your child's education suffers because such people are not being employed.
They have to refuse to enrol children in their classes. Because of inadequate school accommodation and the serious teacher shortage, thousands of Kindergarten children cannot be accepted for enrolment. Is your child on a "waiting list"?
There aren't enough qualified teachers to go around. More than 10% of this years teachers will have resigned by the end of the year. Many of these teachers are being replaced by untrained graduates and part-time casual teachers. Over 500 untrained graduates have been taken on as teachers early this year - most of them in high schools. How many different teachers has your child's class had this year?
They know the Government isn't training enough teachers. Only 260 additional teacher training scholarships were awarded this year - while 21,000 extra children started school. Federal money given to the State Government in 1967 still hasn't resulted in any new Teacher's Colleges - and hundreds of suitable applicants were this year denied entry to the profession of their choice.
They can be paid more in other countries. Professional salaries for teachers are a basic issue - they must both hold and attract teachers in the education service. At present they do neither. It's no wonder a dozen leave every week for Canada. How would you feel if someone was being paid almost twice the money for doing the same job as you?
They aren't given a proper say in running education. Teachers are disgusted and disillusioned by the State Government's blatant electoral dishonesty. Four years ago Mr Askin promised an Education Commission to administer public education - with full teacher representation. This was before he was elected - that promise has still not been kept.
They are angry because education is being made "political". State and Federal politicians are falling over backwards to make offers of more money for private schools. What definite promises have State and Federal Governments made to improve conditions for the 764,000 children in New South Wales public schools? Government aid is needed for State schools.
Problems can be solved - but only by strong, effective Government action. If you, as a parent, want a better deal for your child's education, we recommend that you find out more about the problems from the teachers at your local school and with the teachers, take these problems up with your local Member of Parliament.
