“Like all A.T.C. students before us, we were required to sign a bond, promising to teach wherever we were sent in New South Wales. Most of us were 18-20 years old – too young to vote in those days, but somehow responsible enough to teach classes of more than 50 pupils; to take charge of a one-teacher school, or to educate children at high school who were almost our age! The wide spectrum of stories in the booklet demonstrates how different society and attitudes were fifty years ago and how important our teachers' union has been in improving conditions, rights and class sizes.” – Preface.
