General Note A collection of 14 bannerettes made for the NSWTF Centenary Exhibition, 2018. Each bannerette highlights a Federation Association. These sectional associations no longer exist.
The Associations highlighted by the bannerettes are: Artisan; Assistants; Central Commercial; Commercial; Cookery Teachers' Association; Girls' Mistresses; Headmasters; Infants' Mistresses; Men 1st Assistants; Needlework; Second Class Headmasters; Secondary; Women 1st Assistants; Women Assistants.
"The bannerettes are made of dark blue silk fabric with a border of red silk fabric, with synthetic gold fringing on lower edge. Screen printed gold lettering of Association names have been printed on each banner. The backing fabric is pure cotton. A wooden rod is threaded through pocket at top of each banner, to which is attached a gold painted wooden finial, custom made, at each end of rod and gold cord for hanging. Concept modelled on bannerettes in Sydney Trades Hall collection. The bannerettes were made by Karen Coote." -- Karen Coote, Conservator, 11.10.19.
The Cookery Association was inaugurated on the 12th of May,1912 with Miss M. Low the first president. The Association produced several successful cook books for pupils in public schools. "The common-sense cookery book", published 1914, is in the library collection. The Association also assisted with raising funds for the war effort, Red Cross and other charitable institutions. The teachers involved also provided invalid food during the 1919 influenza pandemic. -- Education Vol. 1 No. 2, 15 Dec 1919 p. 42.
The Association was represented at the first NSW Public School Teachers Federation Council meeting in March 1919. – Education December 1919. "Arrangements are being made to demonstrate Dainty Australian Cookery, suitable for summer, at the Household Management Exhibition, to be held in Sydney Town Hall, 10th to 16th Nov. inclusive. The profits are to be devoted to the Teachers’ Institute Hospital and Relief Society for their Cot Fund." -- Education Vol. 3 No. 1 15 November 1921 page 28.
The March 1922 issue of Education reports that the Cookery Teachers Association contributed 10 pounds to the work of the Hospital and Relief Society. In 1933 the Cookery Teachers' Association had 39 women members and no men members. -- Education Vol. 14 No. 11 September 15 1933 page iv supplement.
