"The bannerettes are made of dark blue silk fabric with a border of red silk fabric, with synthetic gold fringing on lower edge. Screen printed gold lettering of Association names have been printed on each banner. The backing fabric is pure cotton. A wooden rod is threaded through pocket at top of each banner, to which is attached a gold painted wooden finial, custom made, at each end of rod and gold cord for hanging. Concept modelled on bannerettes in Sydney Trades Hall collection. The bannerettes were made by Karen Coote." -- Karen Coote, Conservator, 11.10.19.
The Women Assistants Association, sometimes referred to as the Women Assistant Teachers' Association (W.A.T.A.), held their first general meeting on the 2nd December 1918, with Miss Carr elected first president until her resignation in November 1919. In 1962, the Association was renamed the Womens' Teachers Association (WTA) and the last meeting was held 20th November 1968, with Mollie Baillie Roache as president. Education March 23, 1920 p. 117
The Women Teachers’ Association amalgamated with the Men Teachers' Association to form a new association, the Metropolitan Teachers’ Association (MTA), meeting for the first time on 4 February 1969. Mollie Ballie Roache was at first joint president of the new association however, after a ballot for sole presidency was held at the second meeting on the 12th March 1969, she was elected president.
