Summary Note This is your school. Within these walls and grounds teachers share with parents the task of training and equipping for life the citizens of tomorrow.
Here, within a few short years, boys and girls must learn to read and write, to express themselves in fluent speech and to place their thoughts on paper. Here they must gain some knowledge of mathematics and be provided with an opportunity to develop dexterity in the handling of tools and instruments and in the exercise of the creative instinct.
Here they must learn to love books and from them share in that prices heritage - the literature of history of all mankind. Here the surroundings should be such that boys and girls will develop a love for the beautiful and find joy in creative art. Music should echo from these walls and happy laughter from the playground where there should be scope for body-building exercise in sport and play.
Here, too, children must mingle as members of a well-ordered community, learning to respect the opinions and the property of others, and take part in social activities that will prepare them for citizenship in the world beyond the school. The school must be at once a place where a child has a sense of security, where freedom that respects others is permitted; a place of good books and beautiful picture, a place that will awaken and encourage the best in boys and girls.
No matter where the school, be it a large high school in the metropolis or a school of one room in a remote outpost, it aims to achieve these goals. Schools as such are the responsibilty of the community; our children are worthy of the best, for in them lies the hope of humanity.
All schools should be properly designed and constructed to serve these purposes, and should have modern facilities, ample equipment, adequate playing areas and classes which are not overcrowded.
Every citizen can greatly assist in the common effort to ensure that the nation shall provide proper educational facilities for our children.
