Summary Note
"Barakula spirit is an autobiographical collection of poetry by Gary Zadkovich. The book includes eighty poems that traverse memories of working-class family life in the Australian bush in the 1960's, tributes to family members, the importance of public education and its teachers, political issues and reflections on life. Originally intended for the readership of family and friends, a shortlisting in the 2020 Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize, for the poem 'A gladness for all times', encouraged a wider publication. This poem was given special mention because the judges felt it best captured the spirit of the memory of Bruce Dawe's contribution to poetry in this year of his passing." -- Back cover.
