Summary Note
Text on poster: On February 15, 2011, an estimated 10,000 people descended on the State Capitol in Madison to protest Governor Walker’s legislation to prohibit collective bargaining by most public sector unions. The bill was part of an unprecedented attack on the American middle class, and Wisconsin soon became ground zero in a national battle. The Madison protests continued, day and night, for more than three weeks, growing at times to an estimated 150,000 people. The right of citizens to redress injustice became a central issue and crowed spontaneously chanted “This is what democracy looks like.” It became an enduring battle cry. The protests were unlike anything Wisconsin had ever experienced in their intensity, staying power, and the wide array of people involved. While Governor Walker and the Republican legislative majority forced through their union-busting bill, they awoke a sleeping giant of popular outrage. The future has yet to be written.
