Summary Note There are many obvious reasons why a union that represents teachers should develop views on where that profession may go at a time that looks set for radical change. One good reason is to ensure that socially just and educationally acceptable scenarios are included, and that change, in the interests of both students and the profession, is driven by the best of considerations. This paper portrays some possible and desirable directions. However, it is more of a rough chart than a definitive road map, and the authors hope it will stimulate debate. Constructive argument ensures that educators take an active role in shaping the future, rather than simply being taken there. [p.7, ed]
