General Note
Interview by Richard Raxworthy as part of the Federation's oral history project. Summary: Born at Leichhardt, NSW, in 1934 and was educated at Epping and Fort Street. Graduated from Sydney Teachers College, Enmore Annex in 1955. Taught at Epping West Public, Buddong Mill Provisional, Wagga Wagga (relief staff), North Ryde Public, Ashcroft Public, Crown Street, Dobroyd Point and Villawood East schools. He was first active in the Student Teachers Association and later became Secretary and then President, in the Men's Teachers, the Deputies and the Principal Teachers Associations. He served on the Federation's Executive for five years and was elected President from 1976-81. He speaks of Federation leaders and his associates, of campaigns, particulary for the improvement of teacher education, on the National Committee on Computers in Schools, on the OECD Advisory Commission and of cases at the Industrial Commission in which he was involved. He returned to teaching as Principal of Denistone East Public School and wrote a book on his ideas, Making Good Schools Better, published in 1988. He retired in 1994.
