Title Federation badges 1920. [Object]
Published 1920.
General Note Collection code: Artworks.
Among the most historically significant items in the Artworks Collection are some N.S.W. Public School Teachers Federation badges from 1920.
The blue, white and gold enamelled badges, one with a horizontal pin and catch on the reverse, and the other two with a top loop for suspension, were manufactured by S D & Co (Aust) Ltd, Sydney.
"In November 1920, a competition was launched with a prize of five pounds five shillings for the design of a badge, which became available to members in 1921." -- Emblems of unity: badges of Australia's trade unions, by Gregory J. Smith. Crows Nest, NSW: Little Hills Press, 1992, p. 194.
Contents Note Badge with top loop donated by Peter Mann, Head Teacher Electrical Trades Petersham Campus, Sydney Institute of Technology, June 2000. Badge was accidently found when Peter Mann was counting some coins at a church fundraiser.
Badge with clasp, a horizontal pin and catch on the reverse, was advertised on Internet, discovered by Jeff Kedwell, Tafe Teacher North Coast Institute of Tafe, April 2002. Purchased for approximately $40.00.
Another badge, TF1307792, with top loop donated by Councillor Malcolm Barnes, 17.2.24.This badge belonged to his grandfather, Earle Barnes, he recalls was an industrial arts teacher at Bathurst High School. However, the Public Service List 1927, lists: Earlie [misprint] Barnes DOB 30.10 76, Assistant Teacher Bathurst Public School. Also of interest his brother, Jacob Barnes DOB 9.9.72, Teacher Prospect Public School. There is a possibility that the badge belonged to Jacob, and not Earle.
