It is a selection of entries from the Sam Lewis Peace Awards. These were introduced in 1983 by the Federation as a tribute to Sam Lewis and to encourage attitudes of peace, understanding and tolerance among young people in New South Wales schools and colleges.” – Introduction. Includes visual art entries and written expressions. "These awards were proposed by the [Disarmament] committee in 1982 as a means of promoting education for peace and disarmament among young people. The public launching took place on April 19, 1983. In gazetting the awards, both the Departments of Education and TAFE gave their official sanction." - NSW Teachers Federation annual report ,1983, p. 24.
